PROBLEMS. FACTS. SOLUTIONS
The article characterizes the current state of the fundamental bibliographic project “International Consolidated Catalog of Russian Books, 1918—1926”. This catalog reflects the repertoire of the Russian book of the first post-revolutionary nine years (before the beginning of centralized cataloging in Russia). The released volumes and the database contain information about books published in the RSFSR and the USSR, as well as books from the Russian Diaspora and the White movement. The voluminous array of bibliographic information clearly shows how the Russian book was distributed all over the world and aroused the interest of foreign publishers and readers. The author not only summarizes the interim results of the development of this project, but also analyzes the current problems that currently need to be solved.
The article presents bibliographic resources created by the author at the Chelyabinsk State Institute of Culture and Arts, recording scientific schools of Chelyabinsk: a catalog of a scientific school, a bibliographic navigator, a bibliographic index. Some unique methodological solutions for the structure, visualization of the text, approaches to annotation and abstracting are described and presented for discussion. The role of bibliographic resources in the presentation and assessment of the functioning of a scientific school is shown, as arguments for its formation and development, absence or only the initial stage of formation. The proposed innovations in recording and positioning scientific schools can be used by the bibliographic community — today, a variety of scientific collaborations and institutions are increasingly being created, and it is important to identify the mechanisms of their emergence and functioning to determine the best tools for organizing science and managing it.
ACTUAL STATISTICS
The authors present the main statistical indicators of domestic book publishing for the first half of 2024. The main text and the tables with comments give a clear picture of the number of book titles and brochures, their circulation, themes and the most popular authors in the fields of fiction for adults and children. Particular attention is paid to the problem of interrelations between the potential demand and real published editions in the sphere of the Russian science and education. The comparison of two main statistical figures of the first half of 2024 with the same period of 2023 indicates a slight increase: 101,17% for the total number of titles of books and pamphlets and 100,78% for their total print runs. But one must remember that for total print runs the year 2023 was the worst for all history of the post-Soviet Russia and for total number of titles — one of the worst for the last 20 years.
FROM PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
The relevance of the research is due to the change and expansion of the functions of the editor in modern publishing at the university. The article compares the functions of the editor, reflected in the regulations and the Atlas of Professions, in popular and professional reference literature and the representation of university publishing house staff and university students as future specialists. According to experts developing the passport of professions of the future, the attitude towards the profession of an editor as “outgoing” has been revealed. It is determined that the modern duties of the editor do not always comply with Russian legislation, at the same time, the professional functions of the editor are continuously being transformed due to the increase in tasks.
BIBLIOPHILE’S SHELF
The article presents the publication of 23 letters for 1901—1908 by the famous bibliophile and bibliographer D.V. Ulyaninsky (1861—1918), addressed to a prominent fi gure of provincial culture, local historian, zoologist, porcelain collector, bibliophile and bibliographer A.V. Selivanov (1851—1915). They are kept in the State Archive of the Ryazan region. The letters contain new details about the formation of D.V. Ulyaninskyʼs book and bookplate collection. In particular, they provide additional information about the acquisition of a large collection of bookplates by A.V. Selivanov in 1907. Mutual book donations are also discussed in epistolary messages, and bibliographic information is clarifi ed. They provide information about a number of public organizations (The Moscow Society of Lovers of Bookplates, the Historical and Genealogical Society, the Moscow Religious and Philosophical Society in Memory of Vladimir Solovyov). For the fi rst time, this source makes it possible to clearly defi ne the political position of D.V. Ulyaninsky, showing that he positioned himself as a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party.
FIGURES OF BOOK CULTURE
The work is devoted to the life and creative heritage of the outstanding Russian scientist, book historian and bibliographer Pavel Khristoforovich Kananov (1883—1967). The main attention is paid to the social origin and the early period of the scientist’s formation in the early twentieth century (studying at the Moscow University and then in Germany, as well as the circumstances of his obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Munich in 1910). The stages and peculiarities of P.H. Kananov’s participation in public and political life of that time are shown. The time and circumstances of P.H. Kananov’s transition from philosophy and psychology to book studies and librarybibliographic activity and his employment in the Lenin State Library of the USSR (where he worked until his retirement in 1957) are established.
For the first time, against the background of a brief biography, the scientific activity of Doctor of Philology, Professor A.V. Shevtsov, a prominent representative of the St. Petersburg (“functional”) school I.E. Barenbaum in the field of history of books and book business in Russia, is highlighted. The greatest attention in the article is paid to the study of the publishing activities of non-socialist political parties in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century (the works of A.V. Shevtsov were innovative in restoring the history of the publishing activities of the Cadets, Octobrists, and Black Hundreds). In historical science, the history of journalism and book publishing, his works enjoy well-deserved respect; his works are regularly referred to by researchers (including those devoted to the political books of Russia in the 18th century).

OVER BOUNDARIES
The article is based on a report presented by the author at a meeting of the Bibliography and Information and Bibliographic Services Section during the 28 Annual Conference of the Russian Library Association (Kazan, May 21, 2024) and is devoted to the evolution of reference and bibliographic service models in national libraries in Europe. The author examines the main approaches to the organization of reference and bibliographic services, characterizes the most common functional and organizational models and provides examples of their practical implementation in libraries. It is noted that the traditional model of reference and bibliographic services, which assumes that the interaction between the user and the librarian takes place at a stationary point of service — the reference bureau, is seriously criticized. The author comes to the conclusion that the search for an “ideal” model of reference and bibliographic services that meets the requirements of the digital age is an urgent problem.
CHRONICLE
Russian Russian State Library hosted a scientific conference “The writer and time in the Russian book of the late 18 — early 19 century”, dedicated to three significant anniversaries of Russian classics: the 225th anniversary of the birth of A.S. The event was organized by the Scientific Research Department of Rare Books (Book Museum) of the Russian State Library.
