The first Russian edition de luxe

Abstract

The subject of study of the author is the history of the publication of a series of life-describing essays “Nashi, spisannye s natury russkimi”, which is a bright phenomenon both in literature and in the book art of Russia in the 1840s. This is example of the collective experience of the creative tandem of writers and engravers, book artists, which provided edition with a high status of one of the best examples in the history of Russian illustrated books and publishing. The author pays special attention to the reconstruction of the life and career of the editor and publisher of the almanac A.P. Bashutsky: thanks to his tireless activity the edition was published and was deservedly called the “first luxurious Russian publication”, which still remains today an item of important cultural and historical significance.
